A beeping stairlift is almost always a charging problem, not a breakdown. Across Acorn, Stannah, Handicare, Minivator and Bruno, the manufacturers all say the same thing: the lift beeps when it is not receiving charge. Codes are a different matter. They are not standard across the industry, and the same character means different things on different lifts, sometimes from the same brand. This page gives only the codes we could read in a manufacturer manual, and says plainly which ones we could not.
Three checks before you look up any code
- Is the lift parked on its charge point? Most lifts only charge at the top, the bottom, or both. Left halfway up the stairs, the batteries drain and the lift beeps.
- Is the mains switched on at the wall? Carers and cleaners unplug stairlifts. So do people trying to save electricity, which is the one thing you should not do: a stairlift runs on batteries that need a permanent charge, and a few pounds a year of electricity is the whole running cost. - Is the key turned on, the seat facing forward and the armrests down? Several of the codes below are the lift telling you it is safe but not ready.

How we built these tables, and why they are shorter than everyone else’s
Every row below came from a manufacturer manual or a manufacturer support page that we opened ourselves. Where a manual is a PDF, we read it more than once, and from more than one of the manufacturer’s own country sites where one exists, because a single reading of a dense table is not reliable enough to publish on a safety topic. A row appears here only where every reading came back the same.
That is why our Acorn table has thirteen entries and the tables you will find elsewhere have thirty or more. The extra rows are not extra help. Some of them are wrong.
Acorn and Brooks Superglide 130
These two brands share ownership and share hardware, so the codes are the same. This table is from Acorn’s own user manual for the 130, read three times across acornstairlifts.co.uk and Acorn’s Australian site on 7 September 2026. Only rows identical on every reading are shown.

Beeping on the 130, in the manual’s own words. Off the charge point or in a power failure, the lift beeps continuously for about 60 seconds, then enters sleep mode, after which it beeps twice roughly every 40 seconds. So a continuous beep is a live charging problem and the double beep is the lift dozing.
Reset. The manual’s instruction is to switch the battery isolation switch off, leave it 30 seconds, then switch it back on, which clears the fault codes on the display. On the older single-digit lifts the same manual family says five seconds, so check which lift you have before counting.
Phantom codes: what the published tables get wrong
We call a phantom code a stairlift fault code that circulates in published UK code tables but appears in no manufacturer manual we could open. The Acorn and Brooks straight lift is full of them.
A UK installer’s Acorn code page, read on 7 September 2026, publishes a Superglide 130 table containing A2, A3, A4, A5, C4, E3, E8, F1 to F5, F8, H1 to H4 and P0 to P3. On every reading of Acorn’s own 130 manual, E3 is absent and no code begins with H. Several other rows are not merely extra, they are inverted against the manual:

Two fair caveats, and we would rather give them than overstate this. Acorn has shipped several control boards over the years, so some of these rows may be accurate for a generation whose manual we could not open. And the same installer page tells UK readers to call Stairlift Medics, an American service company, which suggests the table was carried over from a US source and never checked against a British manual. Either way, if the code on your display is not in the manual that came with your lift, the safe assumption is that the table you are reading describes a different machine.
Acorn and Brooks, older single-character display
Older Superglide lifts show one character instead of two. The meanings below appear in an Acorn manual for the single-digit board and are repeated by an independent service company, which is weaker evidence than the 130 table above.

Handicare, Minivator and Companion
These share a group and share a numeric-then-letter scheme, and this is the best evidenced table on the page: four separate documents agree, including the Handicare 1100 user manual and the Minivator Simplicity 950 user manual.

One code where the manuals contradict each other. The Simplicity 950 user manual gives code 1 as requires charge. The Simplicity Plus installation manual gives code 1 as charging. Those are close to opposite readings of the same character, and we are not going to pick one for you. If your lift shows a 1, treat it as a charging state and check the lift is sitting on its contacts.
Freecurve models are different again: they report named conditions on indicator lights, not codes, and the Freecurve beeps for about three minutes when it is not recharging.
Stannah
Stannah does not publish diagnostic code numbers to owners at all, and there is no consumer code table to give you. What its own troubleshooting page does say is short and useful.
- Beeping means the batteries are not being charged. Stannah draws no distinction between a continuous and an intermittent beep.
- The reset is to turn the power key off and back on, then hold the control in the direction of travel for a few seconds.
- Where the switches are: the power key and the master power switch are usually under the seat on the carriage, and the on and off switch is usually on the arm.
- If it stops mid-flight, Stannah’s advice is to stay seated and try to restart it or call for help, and to take it slowly if you do have to get off.
There is a numeric status display on the Stannah 600 control board, and its meanings are printed in the installation manual: 2 is ready for operation, 3 a safety pad obstructed, 4 a switch or key off, 5 an armrest or an unloaded seat, 7 a seat not centred, 9 a stored fault and F a software fault needing a new control unit.
That display is for engineers, and we are printing it as reference, not as instructions. Reading it means removing the carriage cover on a powered lift, which the same manual reserves for trained people. If your Stannah is faulty, the number to find is the service line, not the code.
We could not map Stannah’s Siena, Solus and Sofia models to a code family. Stannah’s own manuals page failed to load with an expired security certificate when we checked, the same expired certificate our price tracker recorded when it checked Stannah’s site in August 2026.
Bruno: the beeps are the diagnostic
Bruno is the one brand here where the beep pattern carries the fault, and the patterns are precise. From the SRE-3000 Elan installation manual:

Note how close the two five-beep patterns are. Both are five beeps and the only difference is which half is short. Count the short beeps first: three short means it is off charge, two short means the battery is nearly gone. Separately, a continuous beep on a Bruno with a power folding rail is not a fault at all, it is the rail moving and warning you to stand clear.
Otolift and TK Home Solutions do not use codes the same way
The Otolift Line writes words on the display instead of codes: lift ready, switched off, off charge and beeping, seat swivel, hinge open, and a service-required set covering battery, motor, brake and overspeed faults. The Otolift 87 diagnoses through indicator lights on the circuit board, which is engineer territory.
TK Home Solutions uses coloured lights on the motor housing on the S200: constant blue means switched on, a blinking green for five seconds means the joystick is being pushed the wrong way, and a constant red with an error sound means a malfunction. Its reset is to switch the lift off and on again. The S200 also has something most lifts do not: a dedicated emergency lowering button you hold to bring the lift down the rail if it stops halfway.
What the manuals actually say about safety
These are the lines worth knowing before a fault happens, taken from the manuals themselves.
- Getting off mid-flight: the brands disagree, and that matters. TK Home Solutions is absolute, telling owners not to get off the stairlift on the stairs even in a breakdown. Stannah is softer, saying to stay seated and try to restart, and to take it slowly if you must get off. Acorn permits it but only once the seat has been fully swivelled to face the staircase and locked, with the seatbelt undone last. Follow the manual for your own lift, not the internet’s.
- Do not force a stuck lift. Acorn tells owners to consult the company before further use if anything has become trapped in the mechanism. Minivator says reverse the lift away from the object first, then remove it.
- Hand-winding has hard rules. Acorn warns never to run the lift with the winding wheel still fitted, and never to wind anti-clockwise on an F7 overspeed fault because it damages the governor.
- Never use a stairlift in a fire. Acorn and Handicare both state this outright.
- Do not switch it off to save electricity. Acorn says the battery isolation switch should stay on at all times. Switching it off flattens the batteries and can shorten their life.
- One person, seated, belted. Every manual we opened says this.
Weight limits are not interchangeable. The manuals give the Acorn 130 as 127 kg, or 159 kg in heavy duty form; the older single-digit Acorn as 109 kg; the Handicare 1100 as 140 kg, falling to 130 kg on a steeper stair and 120 kg on slide track; the Minivator Simplicity 950 as 120 kg; the Bruno Elan as 136 kg; and the TK S200 as 125 kg. That is a 30 kg spread, and one brand changes its own figure with the angle of your staircase. See heavy-duty stairlift weight limits.
When it is not a charging fault
If the code points at the brake, the motor, a relay or the control board, it is an engineer visit. Published call-out rates run from about £75 to £150 before parts, and batteries are the most common paid replacement. - Acorn 180 and Acorn 80. No manufacturer manual opened. No codes published here.
- Acorn F1 to F5, F8, F9, E8 and C6. One reading of the 130 manual returned some of these, two did not. Not published as fact either way.
- Stannah Siena, Solus and Sofia. Manuals page unreachable, expired certificate.
- Otolift One. The E-code table would not retrieve cleanly. No rows published.
- TK Flow2. Two documents give completely incompatible schemes, one E-series and one F, C and S series. Publishing either would be a coin toss.
- Handicare 1000 and Freecurve codes. The 1000 code sheet is an image-only scan with no readable text. Freecurve rests on a single dealer source.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my stairlift beeping?
Almost always because it is not charging. Acorn, Stannah, Handicare, Minivator and Bruno all say the same thing in their own documentation. Check the lift is parked on its charge point, that the mains socket is switched on, and that nobody has turned the isolation switch off. If it beeps while sitting on charge with the power on, that is when to call the installer.
What does a continuous beep mean compared to an intermittent one?
It depends on the brand. On the Acorn 130 the manual says the lift beeps continuously for about 60 seconds off charge, then enters sleep mode and beeps twice roughly every 40 seconds. On a Bruno with a power folding rail, a continuous beep is the rail moving and not a fault at all. Stannah draws no distinction between the two.
There is rarely a button. On an Acorn the manual describes switching the battery isolation switch off for 30 seconds and back on, which clears the display. On a Stannah, turn the power key off and back on, then hold the control in the direction of travel. On a Minivator, drive off the charge contacts and turn the main switch off for 10 seconds.
What does E3 mean on an Acorn stairlift?
Nothing that we could find in Acorn’s own manual. E3 does not appear in the digital display table of the Acorn 130 user manual on any of our three readings, although several UK websites publish it as a chassis safety edge. If your display genuinely shows E3, the table you are reading probably describes a different control board, so check the manual that came with your lift.
Can I move a stairlift manually in a power cut?
It depends on the lift, and the differences are large. Acorn documents a hand-winding procedure with strict conditions. The Minivator Simplicity 950 has an emergency hand-winding knob. The TK S200 has an emergency lowering button you press and hold. The Handicare 1100 manual documents no manual lowering for a power failure and tells you to phone support with the code on the display.
Are stairlift fault codes the same across brands?
No, and they are not always the same within a brand. Acorn uses a two-character code on newer lifts and a single character on older ones, with different meanings. Handicare and Minivator share a numeric and letter scheme. Stannah publishes no consumer codes. Bruno uses beep patterns. Otolift writes words. Any table that claims to cover every stairlift is combining machines that do not share a language.
