An estimate is a starting point. Installers price on the stairs in front of them, and the spread is wide: three UK dealers advertised the same Handicare Freecurve at £3,995, £4,500 and £5,295. Send us the configuration and we will pass it to installers covering your area.
Stairlift cost by staircase type
Stairlift sellers rarely put a staircase type next to a price, and when they do it tends to sit on a single product page. So on 1 October 2026 we read them one at a time: 50 pages from 23 UK businesses that sell or fit stairlifts, recording every price tied to narrow stairs, outdoor steps, a hinged rail, one bend, two bends, more than two, or a spiral. Each price was then set against the same seller’s price for a comparable lift, so a cheap dealer and a dear one cannot distort the comparison.
Comparing each seller’s own prices on 1 October 2026, a narrow staircase added nothing to the cost of a straight stairlift, the outdoor version of the same lift cost a median £800 more, and a curved lift cost a median £3,650 more than the same maker’s straight model.
No seller we checked publishes a price for a spiral staircase or for more than two bends.
| Your staircase | What sellers publish | Extra cost at the same seller | Sellers pricing it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight, standard width | Median £1,995 from 31 new prices (Price Tracker, captured 20 August 2026) | The starting point for comparison | 18 |
| Straight, narrow stairs (slimline models) | £1,245 to £2,495 across five prices | Nothing. Three sellers list a maker’s slim and standard straight lifts side by side, and the slim one was £450 less, £300 less and the same price | 5 |
| Straight with a hinged rail | No whole-lift price. One option price: £850 for a powered hinge on the Stannah 260 Siena (Stairlift Solutions NI price table, May 2026) | Cannot be measured from published prices | 1 of the 6 that offer a hinge |
| Outdoor steps, straight | £1,995 to £4,095 across eight prices, middle value £2,898 | £400 to £1,205 more for the outdoor version of the same lift, median £800 (four sellers) | 7 |
| Curved, any layout | Median £4,395 from 28 new prices (Price Tracker, captured 20 August 2026) | £1,800 to £4,400 more than the same maker’s straight lift, median £3,650 (six comparisons at four sellers) | 19 |
| Curved, one 90-degree bend | From £3,500 for a new Minivator 2000 (Unicorn Stairlifts) | The starting point for bends | 1 |
| Curved, two bends (a 180-degree turn, such as a half landing) | From £3,800 for the same lift (Unicorn Stairlifts) | £300 more than one bend | 1 |
| Curved, three or more bends | No published price from any seller we checked | Cannot be measured from published prices | 0 |
| Spiral or helical | No spiral price. Two sellers give one price for a curved lift they say suits spiral stairs: £4,150 with VAT relief for the Otolift Air, delivery and installation listed separately (Right Choice Mobility), and from £4,499 at the 0% VAT rate (Essential Aids) | Cannot be measured from published prices | 0 |
| Outdoor steps, curved | From £4,795 for the Handicare 2000 Outdoor (Clear Choice Stairlifts) | £1,100 more than the same seller’s indoor 2000 | 1 |
Prices are as each seller published them on 1 October 2026 unless a row says otherwise. Most are starting prices, VAT treatment varies between sellers, and not every seller says whether fitting is included. Every figure, with its page, its wording and the comparisons it feeds, is in the staircase-type price data (CSV).
What this means for your stairs
The curve is what costs money. Going from one bend to two added £300 at the one seller that prices both, while in every same-maker comparison we could make, the curved lift cost at least £1,800 more than the straight one.
On a straight flight, narrow stairs are a question of fit. At the three sellers listing both, the slim models (the Handicare 1100 and the Stannah Siena 600) cost the same as or less than their makers’ standard lifts, so the job is finding one that clears your narrowest point when folded; our minimum stair width guide shows how to measure it. Curved lifts sold for tight or narrow stairs are a different market, priced from £3,500 to £7,195 across six sellers. At Multicare Mobility a new Flow X, made for stairs as narrow as 610mm, was £7,195, against £5,895 for its Handicare 4000 and £6,995 for a new Platinum Ultimate.
Outdoor steps add less than a curve does: the outdoor version of the same lift cost £400 to £1,205 more at the four sellers that list both. One seller runs the other way: Prestige Stairlifts says its external lifts are supplied and fitted from £1,995, below its £2,350 starting price for a new indoor straight lift, though the page does not say whether that outdoor price is for a new lift or a straight run.
Spiral staircases, and anything with three or more bends, are priced only after a survey. Unicorn Stairlifts says its rail can go up spiral staircases, yet it prices only one and two bends. If your stairs look like that, our guide to stairlifts for spiral and helical staircases covers which rails can manage it.
A hinged rail, used when the bottom of the track would block a door or a hallway, is offered by six of the sellers we checked and priced by one. Ask for it as its own line on any quote.
Starting prices assume the simplest job. Stairlift Solutions NI’s Stannah table includes six metres of curved rail, then adds £300 for each extra metre and £200 for a landing stop, and lines like those make up the gap between a published price and a quote. That is one reason the calculator above, a budget band for a typical fitted lift, sits above most of the starting prices in this table. To price your own stairs, ask for quotes and tell installers which row of the table your staircase falls in.
How we compared them
We opened every page ourselves on 1 October 2026 and recorded each figure exactly as written. A separate check re-opened every page the same day: it found every figure as recorded, corrected the labelling on 12 rows (new or reconditioned, and whose figure it was) and added seven prices the first pass had missed.
Only a seller’s own prices count. Halton Stairlifts’ cost page, updated 15 September 2026, now sets its table under the heading “What is the Average Price of a Stairlift in 2026?”, so we treated those figures as market averages and left them out, as we did with Companion Stairlifts’ table, which credits Checkatrade. Every comparison sets two prices from the same seller and the same maker’s range against each other. The straight and curved medians come from our UK Stairlift Price Tracker and its methodology.
