Plenty of UK homes have the awkward staircase: up six steps, half-landing, turn, up again, sometimes twice. Families often assume this rules out a stairlift or demands two separate lifts. Neither is true. Here is how multi-turn installations actually work and what they cost in 2026.
How the rail handles turns and landings
A curved rail is custom-bent from a digital survey of your staircase (how custom rails are made). At a half-landing the rail simply runs level across it, hugging the wall or banister side, then bends into the next flight. The chair glides through turns at a controlled speed without stopping. Inside bends are tighter and cheaper on rail length; outside bends are gentler but longer; the surveyor will price both routes where the staircase allows.
What multiple turns do to the price
Each bend adds manufacturing complexity and rail length. Survey questions worth asking
- Can the rail park the chair off the bottom step (a “drop nose” or extended park) so the hallway stays clear?
- Inside or outside of the bend, and what does each route cost?
- Where are the charge points, and does the chair pass them on every journey?
- Will doors, radiators or window sills on the landings need the hinged-rail treatment?
- What is the lead time? Custom rails typically take 2-6 weeks to manufacture: curved installation timeline.
